As 2019 draws to a close I’d like to thank all my amazing clients, colleagues, support teams (you know who you are!) and networking buddies for their continued support, advice and business throughout the year and wish you all the compliments of the season!
It’s certainly been a busy one here with some exciting new clients including The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool, along with their mighty HMS Trincomalee – the oldest warship still afloat in Europe! As I write this, their unique Hartlepool “magic snow” room is causing a festive sensation throughout the North East, along with a particularly twinkly, sea-faring Santa; amazing, new Pirate Play Ship and fabulous, recreated 18th century quayside. I work on marketing and PR for Ben Johnson Interiors’, managing and implementing social media, press coverage, website copy, blogs and case studies. Ben Johnson Interiors is based in York, Leeds and Newcastle and they create and build amazing workplaces all over the UK. The company has gained significant contracts all over the UK in 2019, designing, fitting and furnishing the new European headquarters of SharkNinja and creating a wonderful, two-storey office and showroom for global fancy dress company Smiffys in Leeds (Smiffys ship 26 million items across the world every year). As well as a vast array of other workplaces of all different shapes and sizes for a variety of widely different clients this year, Ben Johnson Interiors has been working on interior design and fit-out for multi-national, regional offices of engineering giant Mott MacDonald and for national recruitment company, Search UK. Alnwick Castle continues to be a major UK tourist attraction with yet another collection of fabulous activities including the mighty ‘Joust of the North’ planned for August 2020. The Castle’s highly talented events team delivers outstanding, engaging activities, and they’re backed up by a highly creative in-house marketing team and by me – Kate Slater – on their national and regional media coverage. A great new venture for me this year has been delivering PR training. Over the past 14 years, as a former senior journalist and fully qualified, experienced PR consultant, I’ve given many talks and seminars on how to attain media coverage, but I’m now being approached to devise PR and media training courses for in-house marketing personnel. My students are already excellent professionals within their marketing roles but need a little extra on-the-job guidance when it comes to identifying, drafting and pitching items to press successfully. Today’s media companies like ReachPlc (formerly TrinityMirror), NewsUK and the BBC now operate highly influential online platforms as well as print and broadcast media, and the ability to successfully place positive PR items here continues to be enormously beneficial. I’ve devised a 4-week, half day a week course, which I can tailor to each organisation I work for.
